Search engine optimization: Brief introduction

SEO is the art of marketing on the web, as you may imagine SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and as the term says, is the art of optimization for websites who want to achieve higher rankings, on search engines.

I assume every internet user has used a search engine at least one time, and many used them in the same way we use our clothes, in other words, they are the meat and potatoes of the internet. Search engines are so important these days, because most of the internet traffic comes from them.

SEO is marketing, many people may disagree with me, but that’s what it is: Marketing. A search engine is a well organized system that works as a directory, and this directory is cataloged in such a manner that we are able to find any information. We only need a search box and type our terms, and we receive a list of web pages related to the term we are searching.

Let’s say you have brand new website offering microscopes, and you want customers to buy from it. First off, you need to get visitors, and more important, visitors interested on microscopes. How can we get these visitors?Think off Google, how to get seen on Google? We wait to be indexed on Google index, how to get indexed? We submit our website in the submission page on Google. Once we are indexed, we type on Google’s search box “cheap microscopes”, a list of websites is returned but not our website.

Search engines have a ranking system in which they decide which website is more relevant to a keyword. Furthermore, they have a system of quality measuring. Both systems determine whether a website deserves high rankings within a keyword or not.

So you have your well constructed website with pretty graphics and very useful information, but no visitors. Search Engine Optimization is the solution to get seen on search engines.
